Everest Base Camp Heli Trek Itinerary: A Day-by-Day Breakdown

A Detailed breakdown of the 11-day Everest base camp Heli trek Itinerary is shown below.

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Your day begins with your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport

Just then, your agency envoy should be there to receive you.

They will take you to your hotel room. After settling in, take your time to get oriented to the environment.

You should check that you have everything you need. Otherwise, this is an excellent time to go shopping. Your tour does not cover such private expenses.

Afterward, for the second time, you will meet with your agency.

During this time, you will be thoroughly guided on the details of the heli tour, which will enlighten you on salient issues like safety precautions and general regulations.

This is the time you can ask questions of concern for better clarification.

Day 2: Flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and Trek to Phakding (2652 Meters)

After a quick breakfast, a helicopter flight takes you from Kathmandu to Lukla.

Within the 35-minute flight, you get to enjoy scenic views of the Himalayas.

On arrival at Lukla, you will meet the rest of the crew, and the trek guide will prepare you for the adventure ahead.

You will need your trek permit to check in before the trek begins.

The trek to Phakding is brief, within 3-4 hours. The starting point is the National Luminary Pasang Lhamu Memorial gate.

You will pass through the footpath somewhere above the course of the Dudh Koshi River.

Lunch should be provided between treks. As you enter Phakding, you will settle in a hotel where you will rest and spend the night. You can decide to sight-see a little to experience Phatking, and it’s up to you.

They will help in your acclimatization exercise.

Day 3: Trek From Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3443 Meters)

Your journey proceeds along the Dudh Koshi River.

The beautiful sight of cedar and pine trees that trail both sides of the river is one thing you will enjoy.

Through Sagarmatha Park, you will take the uphill trek to Namche Bazaar.

The suspension bridges that cut across the region give amazing views of the highlands.

You will finally arrive at Namche Bazaar everywhere, bustling with activities.

Namche is a highly inhabited village of the Sherpas.

The journey should last within 5-6 hours.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided as when due.

Accommodation will also be provided where you will spend the night.

Day 4: Acclimatization Day in Namche

Because we will hike to higher altitudes in no time, we are taking time today to acclimate at Namche Bazaar.

Namche is a village filled with many activities and amazing places to go sightseeing.

You can decide to tour around the village to experience Sherpa people as they go about their trade and other activities.

There are also fantastic places you can decide to visit, like the Everest View Hotel, monasteries, the tourist visitor center at Sagarmatha National Park, etc.

You can also hike to nearby villages like Thame, Khunde, etc, enjoying scenic views of the snow-capped highlands and the Khumbu region.

By evening, you will retire to your lodge for dinner and rest.

Day 5: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3860)

After breakfast, the hike continues along an upright valley to Debuche.

Through the suspension bridge, you will cross over to the ridge at Phunki Thenka. Here, you will enjoy breathtaking views of the mountains.

The beautiful Ama Dablam, Lhotse Shar, Nuptse, Thamserku, and Taboche are all part of this thrilling view.

You should take a brief break here while you have your lunch.

The path to Tengboche is a challenging tour, sagged with palm trees and leading to the ancient Tengboche monastery.

You can spend some time here enjoying beautiful views of the sanctuary and getting along with the monks.

The journey is within 5-6 hours.

You will have dinner later at the Tengboche guest house, where you will spend the night.

Day 6: From Tenghoche to Dingboche (4400 meters)

The trail to Dingboche is quite undulating. There’s the descent via forest trees in the highlands. Then, the path of the Imja River leads to a downhill movement to Pangboche village.

You should have your lunch in the next village, Somare. This is another place where you will get to enjoy breathtaking views of the highlands; this time, the highest peak was Everest.

Finally, you will reach Dingboche. The journey should last around 4-5 hours.

You will then lodge, rest, and stay overnight.

Day 7: Acclimatization Day at Dingboche.

At Dingboche, you will notice the gain in altitude with the change in vegetation.

The trees get replaced by shrubs, and the plants by grasses.

Therefore, today, you’ll take time again to acclimatize.

You can decide to go up Chhukung Ri. Chhukung Ri gives a closer view of the highlands, such as Mount Ama Dablam, Island Peak, Lhotse, Thermseku, and many others.

There’s Nangkartshang Peak at an altitude of about 5083 meters. This is also a good place for acclimatization.

The Himalayan views from these top places give scenic views of the Himalayas. You’d soak in on these wonders, too.

This should take 3-4 hours, after which you retire to your lodge for the night.

Day 8: From Dingboche to Lobuche(4900 Meters)

After breakfast, we move towards Dulgha.

The journey continues through a little hill. At the top, you can see beautiful views of Cholatse, Ama Dablam, and Taboche Peak. Through some pastures at Yak, you reach the stream at Dulgha.

Along the way, you will come across Palrung Kharka, which offers a close view of the tombstones on the other side.

They belong to mountaineers who died during mountain expeditions.

There are also beautiful views of Khumbytse, Lingtren, and Pumori, while Nuotde and Lhotse conceal the Everest mountain.

In about 4-5 hours later, we reach Lobuche, lodge, and rest for the night.

Day 9: Trek from Lobuche to Everest Base Camp (5365 Meters) and Back to Gorak Shep

Today is the big day. Finally, you are approaching the Everest base camp.

The trek will begin from Lobuche to Gorak Shep. Gorak Shep is the last settlement before the Everest base camp.

The trek to Gorak Shep is quite easy. But I can’t say the same for Everest base camp.

At Gorakshep, you will settle at the guest house and have your lunch before proceeding to Everest base camp.

It’s a grueling uphill trek. The only solace at this point will be the beautiful view of the Khumbu glaciers and the highlands of Nuptse, Pumor, Khumbutse, and Lingtren.

When you reach Everest base camp, you’ll see the gigantic Everest mountain, about 1000 meters away but not so clear.

Everest base camp has beautiful sites that will catch your eye. The colored tent for climbers is one of them.

At dusk, we return to Gorak Shep, where you will rest in a hotel and spend the night.

Day 10: Trek from Gorak shep to Kalapatthar (5643 Meters), Helicopter Ride to Lukla

Kalapatthar gives the best view of Everest Mountain.

After breakfast, you will take the 2-3 hour trek to Kala Patthar. This is best in the early hours of the morning to catch up as the sun rises on the highlands.

It’s pretty grueling, but trying to slow down will give you time to enjoy all that is about to unfold.

The panoramic view of the highest peak, Everest and the surrounding Himalayas is the climax of this adventure.

The Everest mountain, Mount Pumori, Lingtren, Khumbutse, Cholatse, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Cho Oye, etc., makes an unending circular view that can take your breath away as you gaze upon them.

You’d love to take pictures at this point to keep such unforgettable memories.

Afterward, a helicopter flight should wait to take you to Lukla.

This is another opportunity to enjoy scenic views of the Himalayas. The helicopter does its best.

Day 11: Flight from Lukla Back to Kathmandu

Today, you will head back to Kathmandu. It’d come with mixed feelings of all that transpired in the last ten days and your departure.

After your breakfast, the helicopter takes you back to Kathmandu.

This should be a 35-minute flight.

At the airport, the porter will be waiting to drive you back to your lodge.

Safety Considerations for the Everest Base Camp Heli Trek

helicopter at ebc

Beyond the fun of an adventure, you’d want to return to your loved ones in good health after visiting the Himalayas.

Unfortunately,  there are inherent risks involved. Aside from the undulating landscape that exposes trekkers to physical strain or injury, specific health issues like altitude sickness can occur.

Trekkers should, therefore, take into cognizance specific control measures to ensure their safety in the highlands.

High Altitude and Altitude Sickness

As you go higher in altitude, there’s a significant decrease in the level of oxygen available in the atmosphere.

Because your lungs need oxygen to keep functioning, the body will react to these changes. These changes are referred to as Altitude sickness.

It can come in the form of headache, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, insomnia, etc.

Trekkers are allowed some time for acclimatization to avoid this problem.

This is a system where the body is allowed to adjust to the changes in altitudes before further ascent.

As a control measure, trekkers should be given ample time at intervals to acclimatize.

Travelers can acclimate by:

  • Taking time to walk around in the open air.
  • Spending some time at Lukla before sojourning to higher altitudes
  • Spend a day at Namche Bazaar before continuing with their journey.

Experienced Pilots and Helicopter

A helicopter ride in the Everest region comes with its challenges, too.

High-attitude conditions and unpredictable weather conditions could affect their safety in the air.

Nonetheless, there are modern helicopters that are designed to withstand these adverse changes.

It is, therefore, necessary to ensure that the agency you are using makes use of modern, sophisticated helicopters for their tour.

Also, the need for a well-experienced pilot can’t be underestimated.

They will understand how best to navigate the atmosphere in case of sudden changes.

A professional pilot will properly guide the travelers and ensure their safety.

The following are safety measures to ensure helicopter safety on Everest.

  • Reputable agency: Ensure the agency you are using is reputable for excellent rides.
  • Follow instructions: Observe every instruction given by the pilot or professional guides.
  • Acclimate for higher Altitudes: Pilots should allow travelers time to acclimatize before going to higher altitudes.
  • Appropriate attire: Make sure to dress in layers, ready for any change in temperature
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water. It helps to prevent altitude sickness. Also, avoid alcohol and caffeine.
